Manchester City defender Jason Denayer has joined Lyon in a permanent deal worth €10 million with an additional €3.5m in add-ons.

Denayer spent the last four seasons on loan, with one year at Celtic, one year at Galatasaray and one year at Sunderland before returning to Galatasaray last season.

“Jason is a player who we have been watching for the last three seasons now,” Lyon’s head of scouting, Florian Maurice, said in a statement. “He has all the characteristics we’re looking for under Bruno [Genesio, the coach]: versatility, as he is capable of playing in every position on defence, [as well as] intelligence, placement, quickness and winning battles.”

Denayer, who has won eight Belgium caps, never played for City’s first team despite signing a five-year contract in 2015, though he participated in the club’s preseason tour of the United States.

He was named the Scottish Premiership Young Player of the Year in 2014-15 and won titles in both Scotland and Turkey.

His former clubs were linked with moves, but he has opted to join Lyon with the chance of playing in the Champions League.
