How the Trans Nzoia county plan improve life of its citizens

The County government of Trans Nzoia in partnership with Symbiocity and Council of Governors will roll out programs to improve the living standards of Kiminini residents.

Following a number of consultations held between the project implementer s and stakeholders,a unanimous resolution was made that the biggest challenge experienced in Kiminini was the management of solid waste.

Among the activities to be rolled out are Waste Reduction and Greening Project which aim at managing waste from the urban area.

This will be done through opening of clogged drainage systems through redesigning drainages especially in identified hot spot areas along the highway; Ndalu road and Lukhome road.

The drainages will be rehabilitated through restoration and repair of culverts, upgrading of the lining (stone pitching), gradient realignment and unclogging blocked drainages.

Over 130 waste bins, will be installed in every shop and two additional bulk bins erected in town as a way of reducing waste.

The project will also see 40 farmers trained and empowered on how to use organic waste in composting for agricultural waste and use for animal feeds. A composting demo site is being set up on the County owned 1,9 acres of land in the outskirts of the town, comprising demonstration of different compost methods as well as small farms where the compost will be tested.

A community cooker will be installed by the county government at St. Bridgids girls high school. The community cooker is a waste to energy technology that burns waste in a less environmentally damaging way in order to generate heat to cook food and boil water in large quantities.

The community cooker is known to burn waste up to 700 degrees Celsius. Burning of waste in open air is totally discouraged due to pollution in the environment as a result of inefficient burning of the waste.

The school will operate and maintain the cooker through a memorandum of understanding signed between the school management and Trans Nzoia SymbioCity. Residents will be allowed to use the facility incase they have a function.
