EFL Cup to take place in Vietnam

The EFL has confirmed that Vietnam will host the draw for the first round of next season’s EFL Cup.

The move marks the second year in a row that the event has taken place in the Far East, after last season’s first and third-round draws were held in Thailand and China.

Last season, the EFL apologised after early draws were beset by problems, including teams being drawn out twice and confusion around home and away ties.

Nonetheless, this year’s draw will take place in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday at 10:45am BST, with former competition winners Steve McManaman, Louis Saha and Dennis Wise taking charge of proceedings.

Seventy EFL clubs will feature in the draw, which will see teams drawn in northern and southern sections for ties to be played in the week commencing August 13.

West Bromwich Albion will be included, while fellow Championship newcomers Stoke City and Swansea City will join the competition in round two alongside the Premier League clubs that are not competing in Europe.

Manchester City are the EFL Cup holders, having beaten Arsenal in the final at Wembley Stadium in February.
