We will not renew garbage collection contracts, Sonko says

Nairobi County has announced plans to terminate the garbage collection contracts and give the jobs to the National Youth Service (NYS) to clean Nairobi.  According to Governor Mike Sonko  the contracts signed between the garbage firms and the county government had expired and there was no plan for renewal.

In his statement Sonko added saying that the garbage collection job will be   given to NYS  and the County environment  department  had devolved the garbage collection to NYS in a massive clean up for Nairobi and its environs.

Sonko further announced that the Ksh 700 million used to pay garbage Collection firms will be used to pay NYS youth.

In addition to his statement Sonko also said that over 40  international companies had applied to set up recycling plants at the Dandora dumpsite which since 1996 has been full but lack of alternative land has hindered the establishment of a new one.

The recycled waste is expected to generate electricity which will be an advantage to the Nairobi residents.
