Twist In The Matatu Tout Death Case; This Is How He Died

The matatu tout who was allegedly beaten to death for overcharging passengers in Mwiki did not succumb to injuries as earlier reported. Julius Kamau was allegedly beaten for charging passengers plying the Nairobi-Mwiki route Ksh.100 instead of the standard Ksh.80 fare on April 23. He was treated at the Kiambu Level Five hospital before his health deteriorated leading to his death.

After a public outcry and a protest by his colleagues, two officials of the Mwiki Sacco Limited (MSL) were arrested in connection with the assault on Kamau and his subsequent death. The Court was however told yesterday that an autopsy report from the hospital showed that he died of pneumonia and not due to assault by the accused.

The suspects were subsequently set free by the Judge. The Court, however, noted that police will continue with investigations into the incident and if found culpable, the two will be rearrested.
